Jakim ensures products are halal by having random inspections and it should not be blamed for the pig DNA in chocolate incident, says Isma.

PETALING JAYA: There are many possibilities, including by accident, for the presence of pig DNA in Cadbury products and Muslims have to wait for investigations to be carried out, said Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia’s (Isma) ulama supreme council member Soberi Awang.
He said the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) had its own procedures to ensure that products were indeed halal by having random inspections.
“We should not blame Jakim when this thing happened,” he said in Ismaweb. Soberi said Muslims should continue to have faith in Jakim.
The Health Ministry confirmed on Saturday that Cadbury Dairy Milk Hazelnut and the Cadbury Dairy Milk Roast Almond were tested positive for traces of pig (porcine) DNA. The makers immediately withdrew the two particular brands from the shelves.
The Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, however, was declared safe for Muslim consumption.
Soberi said Muslims should refer such issues to experts as mentioned in the seventh verse of Surah al-Anbiya’.
“There are experts in every field that we can refer to and in this issue it is Jakim.
“We should not act rashly and religious institutions must continue to be respected by everyone, especially Muslims,” he said.
He added that Allah would forgive Muslims who had eaten the products without their knowledge.
“Allah will not burden us with things we do not know. This is clearly mentioned in a hadith, where a practice will not be taken into account if done because one forgets or by accident.” he said. fmt
