TAWAU: Deputy Education Minister Datuk Mary Yap Kan Ching should have fought for a better education funding instead of merely agreeing to please the higher authorities.
Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Chan Foong Hin (photo) said he was disappointed when Yap only said positive things about the education allocation in the 2014 National Budget.
“She has conveniently ignored the drastic reduction in the allocation for the national type Chinese School with only RM50 million is allocated, which is half of the sum allocated under 2013 Budget, RM100 million,” said Chan.
“She commented everything positively for the education allocation, e.g. implementing the National Education Blueprint, combining the higher education and education ministries into one ministry, happy with the financial aid for school students and book vouchers.
“But she selectively avoided the most fundamental matter for Chinese community’s interest in the education sector — what happen to national type Chinese School allocation.
“RM50 million is allocated for national type Chinese School under 2014 Budget. It is half of the sum allocated under 2013 Budget, RM100 million,” said Chan.
The DAP Sabah Publicity Secretary noted that the Indian community in the country receives better treatment by the BN government, where under the same budget, the government would allocate RM100 million to enhance education performance and skills training as it continued to focus on the development of Malaysian Indians.
He thus asked whether this was a way of punishing Chinese community for causing the ‘Chinese Tsunami’ in the last general election.
Chan reminded Yap that even MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai had lamented that the RM50 million allocations for the national type Chinese Schools was insufficient, as the number of such schools had risen.
“I strongly urge that Yap, who is also Member Parliament of Tawau, to voice out the matter by touching on her own conscience as Chinese community always prioritize education as their top concerns. Don’t chose to defend the indefensible. Mary should not become apologist for wrong policy in her ministry, but a defender of ethnic equality, as her party Parti Bersatu Sabah, a multi ethnic political party, always champion for it,” urged Chan...Borneo Insider
