PETALING JAYA: In announcing the highly-anticipated Budget 2014
today, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak urged the Opposition coalition to seek
God’s forgiveness for the “lies” they told during the 13th general election on
May 5.
Taking a swipe at his defeated opponents, Najib mentioned
in his budget speech, that there was no proof of the often repeated claim of
Bangladeshis being flown in to vote for Barisan Nasional on May 5.
“According to the 2010 Population and Housing Census,
estimates for 2013 indicate that there are 18.6 million Malays and Bumiputera
including Muslims and non-Muslims, 6.6 million Chinese, two million Indians,
with 259,000 of other ethnic groups,” Najib told the Dewan Rakyat.
“This means that there are about 27.4 million Malaysian
citizens. However, this does not include the 40,000 Bangladeshis who were
brought in as phantom voters in the recent 13th general election as alleged by
the Opposition,” he said, drawing roars of laughter from the BN
parliamentarians.
“Until today, no one has even seen them or their shadow.
Enough of the lies. Ask for forgiveness from God,” Najib urged the oppositio
The prime
minister appeared to believe that God had instead took Barisan Nasional’s side
during the elections where at the early part of his speech, he said the ruling
coalition had maintained its hold on the country due to “God’s grace and the
transformative leadership of Barisan Nasional.”
On May 2, Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim claimed that
dubious voters from Sabah and Sarawak had entered the country on chartered
flights, supposedly arranged by the Prime Minister’s Office.
But the Bangladesh High Commissioner was quick to dismiss
such allegations as absurd and a case of “political manipulation.”
However, accredited election observers namely The
Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS), and Centre for Public
Policy Studies (CPPS) confirmed that the elections were unfair and only
partially free due to the lack of media access and ruling party’s abuse of government
facilities.
However, Najib insisted today that BN had observed the
“true spirit of democracy” during the elections.
“Indeed, we went through a challenging general election.
We take pride in observing all the rules and regulations in the true spirit of
democracy as provided for under the Federal Constitution,” he said.

In wrapping up his speech, Najid said he had resigned to the fact that Pakatan would continue to criticise BN.
In wrapping up his speech, Najid said he had resigned to the fact that Pakatan would continue to criticise BN.
“Despite all the good we do, (to opposition) there will
always be something wrong. Our friends on the other side will always have
something to complain about.
“Never mind. As some people say, even when the truth is
before our eyes, we are unable to see it,” Najib said.
To reiterate his point, Najib informed that Senator John
Kerry of the United States and the Chinese President Xi Jinping, had on their
respective visits to Malaysia, praised the country and its administration.
“One by one, the criticisms are thrown at us. However, we
do not give up easily, what more sit quietly in a corner. Month by month, year
by year, as time goes by, we will continue to rise and fight for the rakyat and
the country.”
The prime minister vowed that he would not allow
“irresponsible people” to take over the government and with God’s will, Barisan
Nasional would present six more budgets before the country achieved high-income
status by 2020.
“For the sake of the country and this beloved land, we
shall defend Putrajaya forever,” Najib said...fmt
