IPOH: The Home Ministry (KDN) will amend the Fees Act 1951 so that a higher penalty is imposed for the loss of the identity card, MyKad.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (photo), however, said if a MyKad was lost for the first time due to carelessness or fire, a replacement could be considered.
“We will tighten the penalty. All these while, penalties are imposed for first time and subsequent losses.
“About 500,000 of MyKads are reported lost, we can’t compromise on this,” he said after visiting the Perak Police Contingent Headquarters, here today.
Prior to this, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said 565,157 MyKads were reported missing as of Oct 31.
Dr Wan Junaidi did not rule out the cards were being used by illegals or sold to syndicates.
MyKad losses reported to the police would be investigated to ensure they were genuine and not related to cheating or syndicates, Ahmad Zahid said.
Ahmad Zahid said Bukit Aman had issued a directive that warrants of arrest and summonses under Ops Cantas Khas Trafik would be served on offenders not only at their homes but also offices and business premises.
He said the status of offenders who had died or moved out should not be regarded as a weakness of the police because issuance of warrants of arrest and summonses were based on name and address.
Newspapers today reported police were going all out to nab 251,273 traffic offenders nationwide, who had more than two warrants of arrest, either at home, place of work or road blocks.
It was a follow-up to Ops Cantas Khas Trafik since Oct 13 to detect and advice 1.7 million traffic offenders who had warrants of arrests for numerous traffic offences since five years ago. IB
