PUTRAJAYA:- The Member of Parliament for Sandakan disputes the function of submarines which were deployed in East Malaysia, in responding to the recent attack by pirates at Sarawak coast.

It is reported in news portal that the pirates had hijacked a registered tanker MT Budi Mesra Dua on last Saturday off Bintulu in Sarawak. A million litre of oil had been stole by pirates, according to Mohamad Sufi Mohamad Ramli, a local commander with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.

Wong questioned that, "why despites so much allocation had been allocated for defense ministry to purchase and maintain submarine, which is ready to protect the safety of east Malaysia coastline, the cases such as abduction at Semporna, intrusion at Lahad Datu and pirates hijack could continuously happen in East Malaysia?"

"What happen to the Malaysia defense system? How the government can convince the people they could safeguard our lives?" He added.

Wong who is also DAP Sabah Deputy Chairman said that according to minister's written reply to him in the parliament, the federal government had allocated about 5.2 billion to purchase submarine, it is including the cost for technical backup, manpower training and etc. The maintaince fee under ISS contract for 6 years would cost about 725 million, including technology services, infrastructure and replacement. It means 100 million more per year will be spent in annual budget.

He stressed that with deployment of submarines in east Malaysia, they should be well performed and fully operated in order to protect the safety of people in Sabah and Sarawak. "It is ridiculous when I learn that the said submarine is not capable to operate Search and Rescue Operation during flight MH370 missing time." Said Wong.

Wong emphasized that the huge budget spent in those submarines must be ensured to perform and operate in full scale to safeguard the sovereignty of Sabah and Sarawak. "Government is to be blamed if it is only act as window-dressing, while big budget was wasted." Wong concluded.
