GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government is seeking a RM20 million federal grant to continue the George Town rebuilding programme for the next five years.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has written to Finance Minister II Ahmad Husni Mohamad Hanadzlah on Nov 28 seeking a grant to be given to Think City Sdn Bhd (TCSB).
TCSB is a special project vehicle set up by Khazanah Nasional Berhad to manage and implement the George Town Grants Programme.
TCSB was allotted a RM20 million grant in 2009 for a five-year period. which ended this year.
According to Lim, as of Oct 31, 2013, RM16.6 million had been spent to implement 205 projects, while the remaining RM3.4 million was for management expenses.
The money was spent for skills development, preservation and conservation of buildings, as well as cultural mapping.
Some 126 projects have been completed while 74 others are scheduled to be ready next year.
Lim said the RM20 million grant had already been spent.
“The state government wants TCSB to continue its initiatives. We urge the minister to give a new five-year grant of RM20 million,” he said.
