The Deputy Chairman of DAP Sabah who is also Member of Parliament Sandakan has issued a statement to express his disappointment at the President of the Republic of Philippines, Benigno Aquino III, at his announcement to the Philippines press that he will not be discussing the issue of the sovereignty over Sabah when he visits Malaysia next week and meets with the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Sabah became independent on 31 August 1963, and formed the Federation of Malaysia since 16 September 1963. It is an undeniable fact that Sabah is now an integral part of Malaysia. The people of Sabah do not wish to become part of the Republic of Philippines. Therefore, it is regrettable that the Republic of Philippines is still lingering on past history. It is time to move on, and look ahead.

DAP Sabah also seeks clarification from the Prime Minister of Malaysia whether it is true that the sovereignty of Sabah is not on the agenda during the visit and why not? DAP Sabah is of the view that sovereignty is such a fundamental issue which should be a top priority discussion and “Sulu invasion” in February 2013 ought to be discussed also. Indeed, what else could be more urgent to discuss than the sovereignty over Sabah?

On the other hand, during the parliamentary sessions on 23 October 2013, the MP for Sandakan was informed in writing by Minister for Foreign Affairs that Malaysia was still paying RM 5,300 per year of cession money to the lawyer representing the heirs of the Sultan of Sulu. DAP Sabah questions the purpose of making such annual payments, because it suggests that Malaysia is only “leasing” Sabah from the Philippines, but at the same time Malaysia claims to have sovereignty over Sabah. Such contradictory stand is puzzling.

DAP Sabah therefore urges the Prime Minister to offer a definitive stand as to Malaysia’s position over the sovereignty of Sabah under international law. The Prime Minister cannot afford to waver over issues as fundamental as sovereignty.

It is unacceptable that such a fundamental question of sovereignty is left unresolved after 50 years, this is highly ridiculous. If there ever was a time for the PM to be decisive, it is now. It is pointless for the Prime Minister to shout that Malaysia will keep every inch of Sabah sovereignty and yet do not able to solve this fundamental issue after 50 years and by paying cession money is really unbecoming. DAP Sabah strongly urge the Prime Minister to act or step down to let someone else lead.
