SANDAKAN:- The DAP expressed disappointment on Sandakan Municipal Council over its inaction to public complaints on the poor conditions of facilities at the Sandakan Central Market.

Our Member of Parliament Stephen  Wong Tien Fatt has written to them to highlight the problems raised by hawkers and stall operators but regretably did not receive any reply from them. Even enquiries by our MPs to the Prime Minister on certain issues were replied by his Personal Assistance (PA), DAP Tanjung Papat Branch chairman Frankie Poon Ming Fung said yesterday.

“This group come to us with the grouses because some of the facilities at the central market have malfunctioned for several years and nothing has been done about it. Their complaints to the relevant authorities and even the Barisan Nasional State Assemblyman, have apparently fallen on deaf ears,” Poon said.

He said the Local Authorities seemed to be dragging their feet in responding to these public issues, which contradicted the Prime Minister's slogan of “People First, Performance Now”.

Poon said there are potholes in the surface of the road at the central market carpark dan its vicinity and on rainy days there are filled with water.

According to Poon, the other eyesore is the sight of rodents in backlanes of buildings in town centre, raising concerns on public health posed by the growing rat population.

“We have been informed even tourists are startled to find so many rats running around the backlanes of the town in search of food, particularly during evenings,” Poon said to the Free Sandakan Today reporter  during his visited at the centre marked yesterday

This gives a negative image of Sandakan and a setback to Government efforts to promote Sandakan as a tourist destination

Also present during the visit to the Sandakan Central Market were Member of Parliament for Sandakan  Stephen Wong Tien Fatt, Batu Sapi division chairman George Hiew Vun Zin, Elopura Branch chairman Calvin Chong Ket Kiun and Jimmy Tsen Nyuk Kee.
